After having been decompiled back in July, the source code for Super Mario 64 has been completely reverse-engineered, and is now publicly available. Available on GitHub is a full decompilation of the beloved 3D platformer, Super Mario 64. The decompilation works for the NTSC-U and NTSC-J builds of the game, with (E) ROM support coming soon.
Super Mario Run 64 is a game that was released a few weeks ago made by Kaze Emanuar. It’s a homebrew game that is based off of the concept of the upcoming Super Mario Run game for mobile devices due for later this year. The concept and controls of the game are simple: Mario runs on his own, and all you have to do is press the A button to jump at the right time to progress through the level.
The hard part about this game is that though there is no turning allowed and you can’t fall along the depth of the stage, the timing for each wall jump is very precise. If you don’t get the jumps just right, you’ll fall to your doom and have to start all over again. Not only that, but there are a few other places that are very complicated like in the video blow when jumping from the mushroom to the grey blocks at 0:23; I don’t remember how many times I knocked my head on the top barrier thingy.

Getting the ROM running is a bit difficult, I couldn’t get it to run on the Nintendo 64 console, but it worked fine on a Project 64 emulator with the settings set to have 8MB Memory (Settings > CONFIG: SUPER MARIO 64 RUN > Memory Size).
The concept is there, and I like the challenge of getting those wall jumps just right, even if they aren’t essential to beating the level. Personally, I’d like to see this get a few more levels, all this work in making the models and coding the movement can be used a bit further to get a bit more juice and make a more complete game.

With Super Mario Run already in the iOS market and all the workarounds promising to bring it to Android proving to be a sham, people without an iPhone or an iPad are looking for alternatives. One modder, Kazeshin has the solution in place with his Super Mario Run 64 ROM hack that puts the game into the popular Nintendo 64.
The ROM is a 2.5D contraption that uses a single button to control Super Mario. A is all you need to jump and there is a total of 100 obtainable coins.
Even though Super Mario Jump 64 doesn’t really give the 3D appeal you find when playing the original thing on iOS, the fact that you can still run without an internet connection is good news.
The official gameplay trailer shows Super Mario going through the scenery as he struggles to collect all the coins in the game. It is a great running game and is definitely going to the records as a classing Nintendo 64 ROM hack.
Installing Super Mario Run 64
You will need the N64 emulator to play the game on Windows PC. Project 64 1.6 would be a great emulator.
