ZOOM, who is known for top notch personal audio capture devices like the extremely popular H4n portable recorder, has announced the Q4n camcorder. At 119mm (length) × 51mm (width) × 62mm (height) and less than half a pound in weight, the Q4n updates the Q4 camera series to 2304×1296 resolution (from 1080p in the Q4), a higher bit-rate of up to 24 Mbps (15 Mbps in the Q4), a stronger wide angle lens at 160º, five steps of digital zoom, a brighter aperture of F2.0 (over the 130º F2.8 in the Q4) and a new touchscreen interface on the rotating 2” LCD.
The Q4n has 10 lighting settings to work with, including low-light presets, and alongside the rotating stereo set of microphones, the price is the big sell, here. At a list of only $299, it’s comparable to most GoPros and other small, self-contained systems, only the camera comes with two high quality X/Y mics that can be positioned at A/B for for stereo sound that captures more of the dynamics of the room and peripheral noises.
The Video The video quality was very good for a camera in this price class. 3-megapixel sensor sized cameras typically can perform very well in good lighting and can be a bit noisy in low light. I found the Q4 to extend into the lower light range a bit more smoothly than most portable video recorders; but it's still a much smaller sensor than a.
Useful in live events and performance video, the Q4n is a camera meant for the YouTube generation, with a USB connection that will let you use it as a web cam, as well, and also one-button recording and internal gain adjustment for the microphones. There is a stereo mini jack for a microphone and combined line/headphone out to monitor audio. I’d really love to see a model come out from ZOOM that also includes 2 XLR/TRS inputs and the same audio features you see in models like the H4n. (*UPDATE: ZOOM let me know that there is a model that offers this, the $399 ZOOM Q8, which you can find here.)
Frame rates, 24 fps and 30 fps, are available at up to 60 fps in 720p with MPEG-4 compression as MOV files via a 1/3-inch 3-megapixel CMOS sensor. Audio is available in uncompressed WAV files at up to 24-bit / 96 kHz or as a compressed AAC file type. Capable of handling sound levels at up to 140 dB SPL, about the level of a jet engine at 100 feet, the stereo mics can be set in a standard X/Y stereo configuration for a stronger concentration on what is in front of the camera, or swiveled out to A/B setup.
With a built-in tripod mount that has a tripod-to-three-prong converter for compatibility with action camera mounts, the Q4n is basically an audio recorder that is capable of secondary footage for B-roll or cutaways. It’s an ideal live camera for video pros that work in event and music performance, and there are a couple of mounts available to address that market specifically with the GHM-1 guitar headstock mount and the MSM-1 microphone stand mount.
