Did you get the USB to Serial cable from a list of known good manufacturers? And cisco 2911 usb console didn’t say it never works. I want to say I saw it recently on a X.
You said it didn’t exist. If you go with Linux check out minicom for the serial program. It was re-written for Mac OS X. A good serial adapter cisco 2911 usb console also consloe in handy for roving techs that might need to connect to a lot of older or less friendly devices like PBX systems, UPS systems, etc.
